Finding The Best Homeschool Curriculum

Trying to find the best homeschool curriculum can be a bit overwhelming and a tedious to say the least.

You may go with recommendations from friends who are homeschooling, or go with reviews you read online or hear from others, but what you may not be considering is the secret ingredient to find the best for your child.

When you start your research, you need to put your focus on your child’s learning styles. How does your child receive and process information, and how does he or she best retain it?

There are three learning styles that you need to become familiar with; visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (touch or tactile).

For children who are visual learners, will learn best by seeing what you are teaching, able to make a mental picture while they learn.

An auditory learner will learn best by listening, and those that are kinesthetic learners, through touch or movement, being actively involved.

When you understand what your child’s learning style is, you will be able to gear your curriculum around that area, focusing on your child’s strengths, then you can compensate in other areas where they are a bit weaker.

Visual Learning Style

These children are able to receive, process, and utilize information by making mental images or by sight.

They may think in print as they read or write, and they do well with charts, maps, graphs, and being able to draw what they are learning about. How do you know if your child is a visual learner?

1. Your child uses a lot of facial expressions when expressing emotion.
2. Hobbies include images or involve prints.
3. A lot of time is spent examining something new.
4. They like to observe a group setting before participating.
5. When solving problems, they look for visual clues.

A visual learner benefits by taking notes, highlighting information, making diagrams and outlines. The written word is easier to understand than the oral instruction. A visual learner make ask themselves, “Does this look right?”

Now the same thing will apply to Auditory learners as well as Kinesthetic learners….watch how they focus, do they ask you to repeat instructions, do they want you to physically show them how to do something before they can grasp the idea?

This is all done by your observing your child in their natural element, and when you do, you will be able to uncover the secret to finding the best homeschool curriculum.
